This simulator models one eight-gong Maranao kolintang recorded by Katunog in Tugaya, Lanao del Sur. The gongs rest on cords across a painted wooden rack called a langkongan. Katunog catalogs this instrument as “Kulintang (Maranao).”
The row leads an ensemble that may also include a drum, a timekeeping gong, and two agung. Maranao musicians shape a piece through repetition, variation, ornament, and improvisation.
Each kolintang set has its own tuning, so the gongs are identified by position instead of fixed Western notes. Gong 1 is the low gong at the player’s left; gong 8 is the high gong at the right.
All sounds come from Caironesa C. Dimatanday’s recorded instrument. The player also includes her sample melody and three named pieces from the same Katunog session.
